They were Southern Californians, through and through, so it shouldn´t have been a surprise that each of them despised what Ohio called winter – which resembled what Sunnydale called winter only in the vaguest sense. Buffy had been heard to declare that if a depressed Angel was causing Cleveland´s snowfall, she was ready to put him out of his misery. Fortunately, Faith was thrilled to be back in a place that "actually has fucking seasons – four of them!" and she was perfectly willing to stay.
It was when they were trying to figure out where to go that the split was proposed. And Buffy and Willow saw Xander standing, and joking, and coping, and still they hesitated – so Xander smiled and lied through his teeth as Buffy looked up the weather in Rome and Willow basked in the notion of sunny afternoon siestas. He came to his senses long enough to turn down Africa – and really, what was Giles thinking? – but agreed that Florida might be right up his alley.
And then, there was Orlando.
Orlando was a strange city, not like anywhere he had ever lived. Not like anywhere he´d ever really wanted to live, because (he admitted only to himself) he´d never imagined living anywhere other than Sunnydale. But Orlando apparently had a Slayer that was in need of his "specialized talents." Sara, it turned out, was short, sassy, and studying to be an accountant. He´d never known anyone who was studying to be something before. All his friends had gone to college to be in college. Not even Willow had known what she wanted to be – and it seemed to Xander that the longer she´d stayed in college, the less clue she´d actually had. But Sara really wanted to be an accountant, for reasons nobody else understood, and so Xander was in place to be supporto guy to Accountant–Slayer. Which kinda made it sound like she slayed accountants, but there were probably demon accountants out there. If Xander had thought about it in the past, he probably would have assumed that all accountants were demonic. Something about all those numbers...
He hadn´t set up a cover story yet. He´d gotten an apartment, not too far from Sara, which was also not too far from the campus. He considered getting a job, but the Council paid well, and he didn´t want to have to deal with demon–related absences. Although, so far there hadn´t been a single one. It turned out that Disney´s magical security was so tight that they caught most threats before they got within a hundred miles of downtown. So mostly he and Sara did the graveyard thing. They´d started to get along really well, and she had even tried convincing him to go to school with her. Not for accounting necessarily (and Xander had gratefully stopped marshalling his arguments) but for anything he wanted. He´d started swaying in that direction, especially when it turned out that the State of California would pay for "retraining" due to the injury he had received during the "disaster." In the meantime, he spent a lot of time hanging out on campus, people watching. Sometimes he even tried to pretend that he wasn´t mostly watching the skinny, blond, beautiful ones.
